David J. Bates was born about 1772 likely in Vermont. The first record for David is an Indenture dated 11 Apr 1804: ".. and David Bates of Chateauguay, Clinton County .. in consideration of the sum of one hundred forty six dollars, and twenty cents, current money of the United States. ... All that tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in Moira .."

"Jonathan Lawrence and Joseph Plumb came the same year with Foote and Seeley, but did not bring their families until 1804. Samuel Foster, Isaiah and Rufus Tilden, Jason Pierce, Captain Thomas Spencer and David Bates came about the same time, or a year or two later."
