Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning for Alfred Elza "Jack" Gregory, prominent Dimmitt businessman who was killed with three others when his plane crashed late Saturday night on a ranch in southwestern New Mexico.
Gregory, 64, a Dimmitt resident for almost half a century, was the owner of Castro County Grain Co. He also had farming and ranching interests in New Mexico and Arizona.
Funeral services for Mr. Gregory were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Bedford Street Church of Christ. Officiating were M.B. McKinney of Angelo State University in San Angelo, former minister of the Bedford Street Church; Ronnie Parker, present minister of the local church,; and T. Larry Marshall of Vernon.
Burial was in West Lawn Memorial Park, under the direction of Dennis Funeral Home.
Born Feb. 15, 1907, in Anson, Mr. Gregory moved to Dimmitt in 1925, at the age of 18. He had been in business here more than 40 years, and had served the county's farmers as an independent grain dealer more than 30 years. He was active in his church and in grainmen's associations, and also was a former city commissioner and Lions Club president here.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Jo of the home, 707 W. Bedford St.; three sons, Dr. Carroll Gregory of San Mateo, Calif., and Bill and Don Gregory of Dimmitt; his mother, Mrs. A.O. Gregory of Dimmitt, a sister, Mrs. H.H. Wright of Lamesa; and nine grandchildren.
Active pallbearers at his funeral were Carlos Calvert, F.J. Mears Jr., J.W. Killingsworth, Odus Hastings, P.O. Goodwin, and Kelly Newman.
Honorary pallbearers were Goodwin Miller, H.W. Golden, T.W. Harrison, Leonard Dempsey, Lloyd Vaughan, Moss Howell, N.A. Baldwin, Edwin Ramey, and Louis Allen.
