Alan served as a Boatswains Mate Third Class aboard the USS Talbot County (LST 1153) during the Korean War. I met him when we were both involved in the reunions of the crew of this ship and though I can't claim to have known him well he seemed to have been a really nice guy. After reading the obituaries posted here, provided by another shipmate who served aboard the ship at the same time as Alan and knew him much better than I did, it appears that my opinion of Alan was justified. He died at the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care in Cheektowaga, NY, of a brain tumor at 76 years, 5 months, and 4 days of age.
