Peter Paul "Pete" Limanni, age 82 of Paulsboro, NJ. passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2005.
Mr. Limanni was born in Philadelphia and lived most of his life in Paulsboro. He was a 1942 graduate of Paulsboro High School where he was a 4 year varsity letterman in football and was named all-Group III guard. He was also a letterman in wrestling, in which he won the South Jersey Wrestling Championship and placed 3rd in the state at 175 pounds his senior year. He was a veteran serving in the U. S. Army as a demolition paratrooper with the 192nd Airborne during World War II. After the war, Pete continued his education with a full four year football scholarship to Villanova University where he graduated with a B. S. in Education in 1950. During his time with the Wildcats, Pete played on a team that was among the best in the nation that played in the Harbor Bowl in San Diego and beat Paul "Bear" Bryant coached teams at Texas A & M in Kentucky.
In 1953 he joined the faculty of Paulsboro High School where he was a teacher of History. From 1954 through 1967 he coached football and in 1968 he became the school's athletic director. Pete was the driving force behind the move of the competitive District 29 Tournament from Paulsboro High School to Gloucester County College. After 35 years of service, he retired from PHS in 1988, the year in which he was also recognized with the Governor's Teacher of the Year Award. Pete also served for many years as the President of the PEA.
Among his many distinctions are Outstanding Graduate of PHS, NJSIAA Sports Award for Wrestling, and the Outstanding Service Award from the South Jersey Touchdown Club. He was a member of the South Jersey Coaches Hall of Fame, Gloucester County Hall of Fame, Paulsboro High School Hall of Fame and the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Mr. Limanni was a member of the NJREA, NREA and the Gloucester County Retired Educator's Association. He also served on the NJSIAA wrestling committee and was on the South Jersey Touchdown Club Board of Directors and was also on the All Sports Banquet Committee for 17 years. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Paulsboro and the Knights of Columbus, Queen of Heaven Council #4154 and the Woodbury Kiwanis.
During his retirement, Pete traveled across country throughout 49 states and most of Canada. His major passions were Paulsboro sports and 2 two granddaughters, Dana Marie and Kristina Lynn. He lived and breathed Paulsboro sports and bragged about his Red Raiders to all who he met in his travels. He was an inspirational and compassionate person who touched the lives of all who knew him. He had a one of the kind sense of humor and was willing to go out of his way to help anyone. He will be remembered for leaving a smile upon the face of all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Betty Limanni(nee Miles); loving father of JoAnne and Mike Gayeski; devoted and loving grandfather to Dana Marie and Kristina Lynn Gayeski; brother to Viola and Dennis Krautheim and also survived by many brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
Pete was predeceased by his parents, Stephen and Sadie Limanni, his brother, John and Steve, his sisters, Rose and Anita and his first wife Frances Limanni(nee Leone).
