Hjalmer Arnold Hanson, 84, of Woodbury, Minn., and formerly of Rice Lake, died Feb. 7 at St. Joseph Hospital in St. Paul.

Mr. Hanson was born Sept. 10, 1915 to Ingvald and Ingaborg (Lee) Hanson in Barron, where he grew up and received his education. As a young man, he worked as a farm laborer and later owned and operated several farms in Barron County and eventually settled in the Rice Lake area, where he farmed until retiring in 1979. He and his wife, Alma, stayed on the farm until 1986, when they moved to Hudson. They later returned to Rice Lake and lived there until moving to Minnesota in 1993 to be near their children.

He is survived by his wife, Alma; a son, Hjalmer “Marty” of Woodbury; two daughters, Betty Klungness of Burnsville, Minn., and Kathryn Medelberg of Coon Rapids, Minn.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mabel Thompson, Ella Hanson and Inga Greenwold, all of Barron.

A grandson preceded Mr. Hanson in death.
