Carl Van Horn was an American serving in the Royal Air Force's 83rd Squadron. He was Navigator on an Avro Lancaster bomber known as B-Beer when his plane was shot down near Caen, France. Though he survived being shot down, he later died while in German custody.

Carl Van Horn's body was found years after his death (along with his crew mates) buried in a French cemetery. (information given by his nephew).
