On the morning of May 7, 2014, Gloria Darlene Wolfsen passed away after a 10 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease; while being attended and comforted by family members at her home in Citrus Heights, California. Gloria was 85 years old.

Gloria Wolfsen was born in the town of Great Falls in Cascade County, Montana at 7:25 PM on August 28, 1928. She was the second child, and the first daughter, of Elsie Beers and Herbert Wolfsen.

Gloria’s mother died when she was three years old after the birth of her third child (Jean). She always said her roots were with her Aunt Lillian Rupnow’s family whom she spent time with as a child, but some of her best childhood memories were from the time she spent in the orphanage where she said they took very good care of her.

She was a woman of courage. At the age of 13 she jumped out of a burning second story window to live. She was independent, smart, resourceful, generous and kind. She was an accomplished artist and could draw, paint and make just about anything beautiful. She was always very close to her brother Herbert whom she connected with by phone almost every day right up to her last breath. In her late teens Gloria’s father married Pearl who was kind and who tried to teach her things. Gloria’s younger brother Daniel was born during those years and she and Herbert often babysat him.

Gloria had a great sense of humor and shared many a story about her adventures at boarding school. She worked in photography and throughout her life she dedicated countless hours in capturing and cataloging memories.

Gloria married twice, to Lloyd R. Price and then Edmund B. McCormack. Her greatest love was her family and her home. A child of the depression era, she vowed her children would never go without and she dedicated her life to carrying out that mission. She was a cook, seamstress and party planner. She was a teacher and she taught her daughters and Granddaughter Morgan how to sew and cook. Gloria wanted her children to have the opportunity of a college education, so she went to work to fulfill that goal. She worked as a teletype clerk for the Sacramento County Sheriff Department for over 20 years. She loved flowers and birds and dedicated many hours in her yard.

Her grandchildren were her second family and Easter was a special holiday for her. Over the years Gloria opened her heart and home to those who needed a place to live or a helping hand. Gloria grew up without a mother, but she somehow instinctively was a great mom. Her gift to the world was unconditional giving of life, energy, time, money, food and love. Gloria Darlene will be sorely missed. She will live on in our hearts.
