Shirley and my mother,Evelyn McNiel, were best friends. Her family became our family. Tammy and I were best friends and I was engaged to her son John. John and I had a beautiful son Justin who was Shirleys first grandson. She adored him and all the grandchildren that followed. She was like a second mother to me. When I lost my Mom it was Shirley I would call and talk too. When I had other children she was a second grandmother to them and they called her Grandma Shirley. Everyone loved her. She was funny, very kind hearted and generous.
Shirley found a strength she didn't know she had when she lost her son Kenny on October 20th 2000 from heart failure due to kidney disease. Shirley doted on her children and a bit of the light in her eyes dimmed that day.
Shirley started going downhill in 2003. No one could figure out what was wrong with her. It seemed like she was fine and then so sick she could barely talk. After many test it was determined she had lung cancer that spread to her bones and her brain. It destroyed everyone who loved her to see her in such pain. It was almost a relief when she finally stopped suffering. Although it broke our hearts to lose her, we gain comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain and is in Heaven with her son Kenny.
We miss you Shirley. Say hi to Mom for me.
A heartful thanks to Wisteria for sponsoring Shirley's page. You are truly an angel.
