Firefighting engines from throughout Sonoma County will form a funeral procession Thursday for James J. Voight, whose lifelong love for firefighting led him to become a firefighter, assistant fire chief and fire chief in western Sonoma County for three decades.
Voight died at his Sebastopol home Saturday after a long illness. He was 54.
Born in San Francisco, he moved to Sebastopol in 1968, where he became a volunteer fireman with the Twin Hills Volunteer Fire Department. He was Twin Hills fire chief for 10 years, until the agency became part of the Gold Ridge Fire Department in 1993, where he became assistant fire chief.
Voight was also a reserve deputy sheriff for the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office for 10 years in the 1970s. Before that he was a special police officer and deputy sheriff in San Francisco.
''It started when he was very young, hearing sirens and seeing fire engines go by,'' said his wife, , of her husband's love for firefighting. They were married for 30 years.
Voight also served in the Army for two years and the Army Reserve for 21 years, leaving as a Master Sergeant.
He was security manager for the California State Automobile Association for 35 years. He was active in Resurrection Parish, where he worked with a high school youth group.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his sons, both of Sebastopol; mother, Erma Voight sister, and brother,
The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary in Sebastopol. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Resurrection Parish in Santa Rosa. Burial will be at Pleasant Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary in Sebastopol. Donations to the Twin Hills Firefighters Association are requested.
