Gary was the middle son of Fay W. Iams and Lois Lucille Alexander Iams. He was born in Springfield, IL however grew up in Southern California, mainly Vista.
He died due to medical neglect, which led to sepsis and complications of cerebral palsy.

He was preceded in death by his father, Fay W. Iams and a great niece, Gabriella. He is survived by his mother, Lois, of Poway, CA, his older brother Larry (Janet) of Datil, NM and his younger brother Jerry (Debra) of Springfield, nephew Daniel of Springfield, IL, and nieces Cassandra of Oregon, Heather (Ian) of Ohio, Sharlene of New York and Kati (David) of California.
