Son of James C (1858-1925) and Emma J (Ward) Callaway (1869-1949)

From Mike Weeks, a contributor and researcher into the history of US Naval Aviators designated as such prior to WWII: "NA#2138 in 1919 as USNRF. Went USN following World War. CO of USS CASABLANCA (CVE-55) during WW2."

From my own recollection of him: As a Commander USN in 1940-1941, Capt Callaway was CO of NAS Cape May, NJ when it was returned to USN from USCG, and of its attached Inshore Patrol Squadron VS-4D-8 for the prewar Neutrality Patrol until the two commands were separated and the executive officer (my father) was "fleeted up " to squadron command and led the squadron to Bermuda to establish a base for the patrol.
