Joan M. Hughes, 90, died on May 19, 2014 in the VITAS Innovative Care Unit of Saint Mary's Hospital, Waterbury, Conn. She was the wife of the late Richard J. Hughes. She spent her childhood in Little Neck, N.Y., then moved to Westbury N.Y. to raise a family. For the past 17 years, she lived with her daughter, Pamela Pratt, in Waterbury, Conn.

Ms. Hughes was born on January 9, 1924 in Elmhurst, Queens, N.Y., the daughter of Nicholas F. Howlett and Ethel (Fabris) Howlett. She graduated from St. Joseph's of Brentwood, N.Y. and attended the University of Vermont and Pane Hall College. Following her career as a science teacher, Ms. Hughes continued to expand her interest in natural science by helping to found Science on Demand, which provided science education for children and instilled respect for animals and the natural world. She later became a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator. She was a lifelong bird watcher and naturalist.

Ms. Hughes was a summer resident of Lake Iroquois, Hinesburg, Vt. she is survived by her son Peter and his wife, Carol, of New Market, VA; daughter Pamela Pratt of Waterbury, CT; son-in-law Richard Singleton of Carmel, N.Y.; and sister, Betty Wright of Farmington, CT and Hinesburg, Vt. She will be missed by her six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Michele Singleton. The family expresses their gratitude to her caring aides, Marie, Comfort and Elizabeth, as well as others who provided her gentle support. Special thanks go to Dr. Coopersmith for her professional and compassionate care. A memorial service was held on July 3, 2014 in Richmond, VT, arrangements were in care of the Gifford Funeral Service of Richmond.
