"South Side Furniture Man Met Death Last Night In Fall From Wagon On Thirteenth Street

"He Was Taking His Horse to the Barn When, Without Apparent Cause, He Plunged Forward, His Head Striking the Hard Pavement - His Skull Was Crushed and He Lived but Short Time.

"John Abitz, of the firm of Utecht & Abitz, Oregon Street furniture dealers, met his death in a peculiar accident early last evening. He fell forward from the seat of his wagon, struck his head on the road, and suffered a fractured skull, never regaining consciousness.

"Mr. Abitz was taking his horse to the barn after closing time, about 6:45 o'clock last evening. People he passed say he was leaning forward, as though reading something in his lap. Suddenly he pitched forward, fell to the road at the left side of the wagon, and the horse kept walking along towards the barn.

"The injured man was taken in his house at 726 Sixteenth street, about five blocks from the scene of the accident. His injuries apparently were fatal, but he was taken in the city ambulance to Lakeside sanitarium.

"The deceased was thirty-six years of age. He leaves a wife and two young children, Ruby, who will be nine years of age Saturday, and Milton, six years old. There are also five brothers, William, Otto, Louis and Albert Abitz, all of Oshkosh, and Emil Abitz of Montana, one sister, Mrs. Yearko, and the aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Abitz of this city. The funeral arrangements have not been made as yet, as the brother in Montana has not been heard from."
