Joseph William Monahan Jr. 92 died March 4, 2010, at his residence under the care of Odyssey Health Care. He was born on Oct. 22, 1917, in Kansas City, Kan., and in his early years lived in Marysville, Kan. Sergeant Major (ret.) Monahan joined the U.S. Coast Guard for duty during World War II. He later joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired as a command sergeant major, following a distinguished, 26-year military career which included the awarding of numerous medals to include the Bronze Star with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a long-time resident of Okinawa, Japan, where he worked as a cargo planner for the U.S. Government at Naha Port. From Okinawa, he retired to Las Vegas, Nev., and then to Hinesville. He was a past member of the Okinawa Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Tina Monahan of Hinesville; two children, Patricia Byerly of Toano, Va., and Michael Monahan of West Point, Va.; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.
