OBITUARIES
Bellingham Herald, The (WA) — Wednesday, February 16, 2005
Frank Dews, age 82 of Ferndale, died at Christian Healthcare Center in Lynden on Sunday, February 13.

Frank was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on November 21, 1922 and was the only child of Frank and Mattie Dews. Frank was raised in Nashville, Tennessee and at age 19, volunteered to serve his country. He joined the US Navy and served aboard the USS Tennessee during World War II from December 9, 1941 to December 31, 1946 and was honorably discharged as a Boatswain's Mate First Class. Frank received several commendations while in the service, including the Pacific Theatre Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, Commendation Ribbon, Victory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. His navy unit received a commendation for outstanding heroism in action against enemy forces during the period of January 31, 1944 to June 21, 1945. While stationed in Bremerton, Washington, Frank met and later married Glenister Marie Ross on March 27, 1943. They moved to Philadelphia, then Nashville and eventually made their home in Whatcom County where they raised two children.

Frank's love of the water kept him employed as a commercial fisherman in Alaska for 20 years but he is probably best remembered as a bartender at several establishments in Bellingham including The Horseshoe, Royal Inn, The Elks Club, Pastime, and Kovacs. He also worked in maintenance for Comptec for ten years until his retirement in 1993. Frank was a member of VFW Post 9474 of Custer, Alaska Fisherman's Union, and the Culinary Beverage Worker's Union. Frank enjoyed golfing but was happiest fishing on the banks of the Nooksack River and the lakes of British Columbia.

Frank is survived by his daughter Karen Flaherty and husband Pat, of Ferndale; a son, Steven and his wife Laurel, of Birch Bay; and grandchildren. His parents and his wife, Glenister, preceded him in death.

A special heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Christian Healthcare, Sehome Park Convalescent, and Deerwood Adult Family Home. At his request, there will be no services. Memorials may be made to Christian Healthcare Center in Lynden, or the American Diabetes Association.
