Kristin S. Hackler died Oct. 6 unexpectedly as the result of a stroke. She was 63.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 at Hooper & Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City, with a reception to follow.

She was born Feb. 17, 1946, in Woodland to Myron and Marjorie Schaffer.

She was the oldest of five children. The family lived briefly in New York, moved back to Davis and later to Santa Rosa, following their father's work as a veterinarian.

She attended schools in Santa Rosa and graduated from Montgomery High School at age 16, with the class of 1962. She attended UC Berkeley and graduated from UC Davis in 1966 with a B.A. in history before attending Georgetown University, where she received her M.A. She graduated from Golden Gate University School of Law with her J.D. in 1980 and was admitted to the State Bar of California in May 1981.

She practiced law in the Bay Area, where she met William (Bill) Hackler. They were married March 24, 1978, at Tilden Park in Berkeley. They moved to Nevada County in 1989, where she worked for Nevada County as deputy district attorney for 13 years before retiring in 2006.

She was active in local community organizations including SNMH Foundation, The Friendship Club, Project Jump Start, and Hospice of the Foothills, where she served on the board. She was also a member of the Baha'i Faith, 49er Rotary Breakfast Club, the Rotary Women's Book Club, the American Bar Association, Nevada County Bar Association, Alameda County Bar Association, Women Lawyers of Alameda County, Bar Association of San Francisco and American Trial Lawyers Association.

She loved to read, enjoyed traveling, gardening, spending time with her grandchildren and playing games and cards with friends.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Hackler of Grass Valley, daughter Larissa (Greg Goings) Bailiff of New York; son, Dr. Nathan (Leslie) Bailiff of Folsom; stepson, Chris (Ann Marie) Hackler of Philadelphia; stepdaughter Carol (Peter) Jackson of Berkeley; grandchildren Milan Jackson, Evan Goings, Zachary Bailiff and Lena Goings; sisters Sandi Schaffer (Gary) Roberts of Grass Valley and Marni (Rusty) Bagwell of Miss.; brothers Michael (Linda) Schaffer of Napa and Kerry Schaffer of Santa Rosa, nephews Alex Metaxas and Josh Gum and niece, Marjie Scott.

She was predeceased by her parents, Myron and Marjorie Schaffer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to Hospice of the Foothills, 11270 Rough & Ready Hwy., Grass Valley, CA 95945.
