Charles "Chuck" Ernest Opdyke, longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully at age 82, on April 26, 2014.
Charles was born in Ridgeway, MO on April 8, 1932.
Charles graduated from Trenton High School in 1950. Charles attended electronic school in Kansas City, MO. When he finished school people were not hiring men of drafting age so Chuck joined the United States Army in 1952, serving in Korea, working as a field radio mechanic. Chuck was stationed at Ft. Drum, NY where he met Agnes LaBrake on a blind date, they were married on September 26, 1954. Leaving the United States Army in 1955 they moved to Albuquerque, NM.
Charles worked at American Furniture as an electronic technician for 14 years. Charles was the owner and operator of Alco Electronics from 1972 until 1994. Charles was mechanically creative, making or fixing all kinds of contraptions. Charles was a Ham radio operator call sign KC5GA, and was a part of Search and Rescue volunteers. Charles had a love of trains and photography. Charles also enjoyed gardening, wood carving and RV-ing.
Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, his children, Frank and his wife, Sharon of Albuquerque, NM, Ken and his wife, Ginger of Oak Harbor, WA, Ruth Opdyke of Albuquerque, NM and Keith and his wife, Brandi of Tucson, AZ, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, his sister, Zelda Maggart, nephew, Steve Maggart and his wife, Linda of Albuquerque, NM and a host of other nephews and nieces.
A visitation will be on Friday, May 2, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM. Graveside service will be on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Sandia Memory Gardens, 9500 San Pedro NE, Albuquerque, NM. A reception will follow at North Hills Mobil home park club house 7200 North Hill Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of the Sandias, 105 Hospital Loop NE Albuquerque, NM 87109 or Alzheimer’s Association, http://www.alz.org/join_the_cause_donate.asp, 9500 Montgomery NE Suite 121 Albuquerque, NM 87111.
