ALLENDALE - Katherine Smith Lancaster, 89, wife of Wilmot "Bill" Lancaster, passed peacefully Sunday afternoon, July 8, 2012, in Columbia, in the presence of her husband, daughter, and son.
Kay, known as Ethel to classmates, was born in Millett, S. C., to Duncan Clinch and Janie Boatwright Smith. Kay and her late siblings Duncan Clinch (D C) Smith Jr., Lawrence Pinckney (Smitty) Smith and Elizabeth (Liz) Massey were all reared in Allendale by their step-mother Attie-Mae Smith.
During WWII, Kay worked as a stenographer in Sumter at Shaw Field. After the war ended, she worked for the U. S. War Department during the Allied Occupation in Japan. There she met the father of hr two children, Lt. Col. Alvin Ash, USA-Ret., and traveled as an Army wife until she returned to Allendale in 1963 to raise her two children, Scottie and Robert.
In 1972 she married Wilmot (Bill) Lancaster of Govan, S. C., and together they were familiar friends to many of Scottie's and Robert's classmates, leaving all with wonderful memories of those years. Kay enjoyed working, and over the years touched the community working in the Allendale County Sherriff's Office, Butler's Florist, the Village Inn Restaurant, and several roles at the OCAB Community Action Agency, from which she retired in 2005.
She is survived by her daughter Scottie Ash Nicholson and husband Norm of Columbia, her son Robert Wilson Ash and wife Sharon of Austin, Texas, her granddaughter Katherine Michelle Ash, her husband of 40 years, Wilmot (Bill) Lancaster, and her step-son Glenn Lancaster and his wife Cindy, their daughter Tiffney Moore (Tommy), son Travis Lancaster (Michelle), and five step-great-grandchildren.
