Richard McCray "Dick" Breeze

Dick was born in Bradenton, FL, one of the triplet sons - Tom, Dick, and Harry, born to George M. Breeze and Marguerite "Peggy" Hawkins Breeze.

His father had also been born in Bradenton in 1907, and his mother was born in Dublin, GA.

The Breeze family first lived on Riverview Boulevard and in 1950 they moved to a new home that Dick's father built on the middle branch of Warner's Bayou. His father continued to build homes in that area and eventually developed a sizable community of homes all around the bayou.

Dick's maternal grandfather was A.K. Hawkins, and the football stadium at Manatee High School bears his name.

The Breeze triplets all attended Ballard Elementary School from kindergarten through 5th grade, before transferring to Jessie P. Miller Elementary School in 1955. After completing 6th grade at Jessie P. Miller, Dick went to Walker Junior High School where he attended before coming to Manatee High School 1959.

After high school, Dick attended Florida State University and Manatee Community College for awhile, but in 1964 he realized his childhood dream to play guitar in his own band. He started a band and soon was traveling all over Florida, playing in venues throughout the state.

In 1964 he went to a party at Rick Hutchinson's house on the island, as his band was playing for the event. At the party he met Susan Elizabeth Kenworthy, also a Manatee High School graduate, class of '64. After that they began dating and in May 1965, he and Susan were married (Dick says he gave Susan a warning before the marriage that he would need to be fishing "occasionally").

Their three sons were born in 1969, 1972, and 1976, and years later each of them would graduate from Manatee High School. These boys have presented them with four granddaughters and a grandson ages 3 to 19.

Dick was enjoying his band gigs when the draft interrupted his music endeavor, and in 1966 Dick found himself in U.S. Marine Corps boot camp at Paris Island, SC. He was initially sent to Camp Lajeune, NC, to become a diesel mechanic, but was reassigned to work in the personnel office there. Upon his discharge in 1958, he immediately headed back to Bradenton and soon become interested in the building business.

He worked to attain his general contractor's license, and quickly did so. From 1970 until 1984, Dick was a very busy residential contractor in the Manatee County area, building over 400 homes. After 1984 he primarily built commercial buildings, specializing in stores, medical offices, and surgical suites. Among his accomplishments in the Bradenton area are a number of the stores in the Ellenton Outlet Mall, and a three-story school in Palmetto, the Manatee School for the Arts.

Dick built projects out of state as well, in Maryland, Hawaii, California, Arkansas, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and New Jersey. In 2005 he retired from building and accepted a job as Building Inspector for Manatee County and more recently for the City of Bradenton and took great pride inspecting HUD homes.

For 19 years Dick was on the Board of Zoning for Manatee County and the Endangered Lands Management and Acquisition Board. Music remained his passion, and Dick had quite a collection of guitars. He was an avid fisherman, and often fished in tournaments with his son.

Dick was a beloved husband to his wife of 47 years Susan Breeze, a brother to Peggy Jean Selman and her husband Bill Selman, Harry Breeze and his wife Dorothy Breeze.
