Leonard Carl Chase

Leonard Carl Chase, 91, passed away under Hospice Care on March 1, 2014, after a long illness of heart failure and Alzheimer's. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Catherine Chase, daughter Cynthia Chase and son-in-law Jim Garrett of Lincoln City, Oregon; son Calvin and grandson Tyler of Napa, California; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his grandparents Robert and Janette Waugh, mother Bessie Huppenthal, father David, sister Darlene and brother Paul.

Leonard was born in Iowa and raised by his adoring grandparents in Montana. Leonard enjoyed the open environment of White Sulphur Springs, Montana, especially the rodeo circuit.

Leonard, age 17, enlisted in the US Navy. He served on PT Boat Squadrons 2 and 3 on the island of Tulagi, in the Guadalcanal campaign. He was a sharpshooter in the National Guard.

Leonard was a lifetime member of PT Boats Inc. and the American Legion. He worked at several shipyards and finally at Mare Island Naval Shipyard as a welder on nuclear submarines.

A military service with full honors will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.

Note: The obituary does not say where he died; however, based on the fact that it appeared in the local paper, and that he has family in Lincoln City, and was under hospice care, I have deduced that he likely died where I have indicated. If more information, or different information is brought to my attention, I will happily correct the above information.....Mary
