Baptised as John in Albany, NY, he took the name Thomas Mary at his profession of vows in the Dominican Order. Attended Vincentian Institute in Albany. He had flaming red hair and was nicknamed 'Reddog' by his friends, which he latinized to 'Canis Rosa'. He entered the Dominicans in 1974 and professed simple vows at their novitiate in Dover, MA. He went on to study for the priesthood at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC. He died while vacationing with his family at their summer home on Saratoga Lake. He is buried in the Dominican Plot of the cemetery.
Cause of death: Traumatic head injuryJohn Alexander Murray, Jr. was born on 14 October, 1951, the first child/first son of John Alexander Murray and Rosemary Hannan Murray. He was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy, New York. He attended St. Catherine of Siena elementary school in Albany, New York, and was a graduate of the class of 1969 from Vincentian Institute in Albany, New York. In high school, he was known by the nickname "Red dog", because of his red hair. He was an extremely accomplished pianist, and was interested in journalism, classical music, theatre, theology, philosphy and literature. He attended a year of college at St. Michael's University in Toronto, Canada. He then returned to Albany, New York, where he attended The Junior College of Albany, a division of Russell Sage College, from which he graduated in 1971. He then completed his collegiate studies at Utica College, in Utica, New York, a division of Syracuse University, where he majored in English and minored in Philosophy. He graduated from Utica College in May 1973 and was extremely proud to enter the Order of Preachers as a Dominican novice in August 1973, where he first took the name of Thomas Mary Murray, OP, but then changed his name to Thomas, after Thomas a Becket. He professed his simple vows in August 1974 at the Dominican novitiate house in Dover, Massachusetts. He then went on to continue his studies with the Order of Preachers at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC. In August 1975, he was home on vacation at his parents' summer residence on Saratoga Lake, where he died at the age of 23 on 26 August, 1975, from a head injury sustained in a boating accident. He was interred in the Dominican section of Mt. Olivet Cemetery in September 1975. His sudden tragic passing was mourned by all who knew him and though his life was cut short, he touched the life of everyone who knew him in a most extraordinary manner.
