Memorial service for Frank Andrew Smallwood, age 88 of Harmon, will be Friday, Apr 29, 2011 at 10:00 AM in the Harmon United Methodist Church. Pastor Lee will officiate. Cremation has been accorded; burial will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. A luncheon will immediately follow the service in Antler Room at the Dixon Elks Lodge.
Mr. Smallwood passed away on Thursday, Apr 21, 2011 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. He was born on Nov 20, 1922 in Harmon, IL to Joseph A. and Leafy (Hettinger) Smallwood. Frank served as a pilot during WWII from 1944-45. He married Marilyn Schmidt on Sep 03, 1950. Frank was a master of all trades. He was an auto and farm equipment mechanic, ran a hardware store, did furnace and plumbing work, and sold and repaired televisions and electronics. While serving as Harmon Village Postmaster in 1953 he farmed 240 acres and loved it so much he called it his hobby. Frank also served on the village board in Harmon for many years before Alzheimer's began to claim his life.
Frank is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marilyn Smallwood of Harmon. Also surviving are two daughters; Dawn Foss and Gay (Don) Janssen both of Dixon, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters; Irene and Alice, and one brother Ernest.
Memorials may be directed to the Harmon First United Methodist Church or to Walnut Manor Nursing Home.
