Leroy Wright (along with his older brother Andrew) was one of the nine young men known as the "Scottsboro boys" who in 1931 was arrested on trumped up charges of raping two white women, and who with his eight co-defendants faced almost certain death in a racially divided south. At 13, he was one of the youngest of the defendants. His conviction, as would those of the other nine, would eventually be overturned, and Wright would attempt to resume a quiet lef. However, like many of the young men, his experiences in the brutal, racist prison system had left him emotionally scarred. He could not maintain stable relationships in his life and in 1959, after discovering that his girlfriend was involved with another man, he killed her and himself.
