Weapon Used: Officer's handgun

Officer Slater accidentally shot and killed himself while attempting to assist Officer Silas Martz[sic], who had just been shot by a suspect. The two officers had responded to a disturbance involving a drunk man at a local store. As Officer Martz[sic] entered the store he was shot in the neck by the suspect with a .45 caliber pistol and killed instantly. As Officer Slater entered the store to help Officer Martz[sic] he began to draw his weapon which discharged and struck him in the leg. Officer Slater succumbed to his wound the next day.

Pueblo Police Department - October 1903 - Officer Elwin Slater, Officer Silas Martz[sic], Pueblo Police Department - Officers Martz[sic] and Slater responded to a disturbance at the Palace Drug Store on October 7, 1903. Dr. C. O. Rice was intoxicated and threatening people with a .45 revolver. Martz[sic] entered the store and tried to talk to Dr. Rice, but as he stepped forward, Rice shot him in the neck. Slater then entered the drug store and tried to draw his weapon, accidentally discharging it and shooting himself in the leg. Martz[sic] died immediately following the incident, and Slater died a day later from his wound.

Officer Marts (# 51702362) is buried next to Officer Slater, but there is no headstone for Officer Slater.
