Tragic Death For Nelson Man – Frank Ender Fatally Injured Tuesday by Falling Tree – Accident Casts Cloud of Sorrow Over Community
Frank Ender of Nelson, Wisconsin, 85 years old, was the victim of a distressing accident Tuesday afternoon between two and four o'clock when he was struck by a falling tree and receiving injuries which resulted in his death a few hours later.
Together with another man Ender was engaged in cutting down a tree along the road between Nelson and Alma, about four miles from Nelson. The men evidently miscalculated the direction of the falling tree, according to reports Ender did not notice the unexpected danger in time to get out of the way. The falling tree struck him with such force as to inflict fatal injuries to his head. He was saved from being pinned down by a log lying in the path of the tree.
The unfortunate man was at once hurried to the ferry landing and brother to the Wabasha hospital, where he expired at 5 o'clock, shortly after his arrival. The remains were taken to the Wise undertaking parlors in Wabasha, and on Wednesday afternoon removed to the home in Nelson.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9 o'clock at the Catholic church at Nelson, the Rev. Fr. Eicher officiating. Internment will be made in the cemetery there.
Frank Ender was born at Nelson, Wis., and spent practically his entire life there. He was married at Nelson to Josephine Breitung, who with three sons and two daughters survives him. The children are August and Frank Ender of Chippewa Falls, Wis., Louis Ender of Milwaukee, Mrs. Louisa Raddatz (sic) of Nelson and Mrs. L. E. Marcks of Pepin, Wis.
Mr. Ender also leaves two brothers and two sisters: John and Tebe Ender of Nelson, Miss Susie Ender of Nelson, and Mrs. John Swendiman of Dodge Center, Minn.
Mr. Ender for many years operated a farm near Nelson. From 1907 to 1909 he resided in Spokane, Washington. At the time of his death he was engaged in road work in Nelson township. He was well known and highly esteemed in the community. Always industrious, a devoted husband and father, a model citizen, he will be missed by all who knew him.

Nelson Man Fatally Injured Tuesday
Frank Ender, Sr., Meets with Tragic Accident North of This City That Afternoon
Frank Ender Sr., well known resident of Nelson, met with a fatal accident while engaged in cutting down trees along the highway near the Skreif place about four miles north of this city Tuesday afternoon, April 12, when a large tree fell upon him and injured him to such an extent that death ensued soon after.
The unfortunate man, together with patrolman Joe Stoll, was cutting down trees along the right-of-way at a point, familiarly known as Camp No. 2, to enable them to straighten out a bad curve in the road at the foot of the incline and as a large tree was about to fall Mr. Ender ran down the slope with the intention of getting out of danger only to have the tree fall in the direction in which he was going, crashing down upon him, a large limb striking him to the ground.
Dr. E. W. Jardine was hurriedly summoned from this city and upon his arrival at the scene found that the injured man had suffered a crushed skull and his left leg was broken and seriously crushed, besides being badly bruised otherwise. He was placed in a car with the intention of taking him to the hospital in Wabasha but death occurred just before reaching there, the injured man never regaining consciousness.
The tragic death has cast a cloud of sorrow over the community and the deep sympathy of all goes out to the bereaved relatives. Mr. Ender was sixty-six years of age and leaves besides his sorrowing widow, five children; Mrs. Chas. Radatz of Nelson, August F. and Frank Jr. of Chippewa Falls, Mrs. Louis Marcks of Pepin and Louis of Milwaukee.

Frank Ender
As stated in the last issue of the Journal Frank Ender was accidentally killed by a falling tree near the Skrief place on the Nelson-Alma road.
Being alive through unconscious, he was rushed to the Wabasha hospital and upon his arrival there he breathed his last. He was born Jan. 26,1865, at Dubuque, Ia. His parents moved to Wabasha, then to Farmer's Home in the town of Nelson and then onto the Ender Farm now occupied by Susie Ender, where Frank grew to manhood.
In 1880 he was married to Josephine Breidung, to which union five children were born, three boys, August of Chippewa Falls, Frank of Chippewa Falls, and Louis of Milwaukee; and two sisters, Mrs. Charley Radatz and Mrs. Louis Marks, the former of our town and the latter of Pepin. All of the children were summoned at the time of the accident and remained until after the funeral.
Frank Ender also leaves to mourn his loss two sisters, Mrs. John Schwendeman of Dodge Center, Minn. (who in company with her son John was in attendance at the funeral) and Miss Susie Ender and two brothers, Tebe and John.
The funeral services were conducted by Father Eicher of Fountain City who paid a fitting tribute to the memory of the deceased, pointing out the simplicity of his life, his kindness of heart and his faithfulness in the discharge of his duties.
Frank Ender lived for the most of his married life on a farm near Nelson. In 1914 he sold the farm and removed to the village where he purchased what is known as the Louis Anderson residence and while he retired from the farm he was never known to be idle. His services were always in such demand that when one job was done another was ready for him. As a neighbor he had no superior for he was always ready with a kind word or deed and these qualities of heart and soul wan for him the esteem of the entire community. The large attendance at the funeral is a testimonial of the loss sustained and the kind regard held for him by his large circle of acquaintanceship.
Among those from out of town in attendance at the funeral the following were noted: Earl, Roy and Harry Ender, children of the late Jake Ender, Mrs. Annie Atkin and Kitty Hawley of Wabasha; Mrs. Lena Schwendeman and son John of Dodge Center, Minn.; Mrs. Della Breidung, three sons, Raymond, William, and George and one daughter, Blanche of Pepin; Mr. and Mrs. Anton Brunner and son Henry of Durand; Elmer Smeltzer and Arthur Ender of Mondovi and Alfred Ender of Alma.
A good citizen, neighbor, husband and father has gone to his reward. May he rest in peace.
