Marie Jones, 106, died March 25, 2014 at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance.Alice Marie Jones was born on February 20, 1908 in Hyannis, Nebraska to William Hugh and Alice (Monahan) Jones. She was the second of seven children.
Known by her middle name, Marie lived most of her childhood on her father's ranch and attended elementary and high school in Hyannis. After graduation and having achieved her Normal Training Certificate, she taught at Grant and Cherry County country schools, including the Gentry and Burgess Schools.Her education continued at Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, MO, after which she returned to Hyannis where she became the first woman to work in the Grant County Court House. She also worked for the Grant County Attorney, Elmer "Pete" Gudmensen while in Hyannis.
During WWII she moved to Alliance, NE where she began working for the government at the air base, work that she continued for the rest of her career. At the end of the war, her office moved to Denver, CO where she continued working for the government and eventually was transferred to Kansas City, MO. She worked there until her retirement.Following her retirement, she moved to Deadwood, SD to help her sister, Ruth care for their mother. After her mother's passing, she moved back to Alliance.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, James and Boyd Jones, her sisters, Margaret Kommers, Frances Hayward, Ruth Perrett and Lois Mansfield, 3 nephews, Tom Perrett, Jim Kommers and Dick Perrett and a great-great-great niece, Morgan Caroline Teahon.Her survivors are four generations of nieces and nephews, including Sharon Wheelock of Hyannis, who considered her the beloved head of the family and she was interested in each and every one of them. One of the highlights of her life was her 100th birthday at which the nieces and nephews honored her with a special party. In 2008 the Nebraska Legislature introduced and passed a resolution of recognition of Marie and her accomplishments during her lifetime. She delighted in being in what she called "my new year" when she reached 101 and each year beyond.She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior in 2001 and was active in church. She also belonged to the First Presbyterian Church in Alliance, Golden Rule Chapter of Eastern Star of Hyannis and the Red Hat Ladies. Graveside services will be March 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hyannis Cemetery.
