Note (Peter Hakze) John Atkinson was a gunner of the British Lancaster bomber R5755 that on a raid to Bremen, NW Germany was shot down by a night fighter into the Ijsselmeer Lake, East of Medemblink City, NW Netherlands, killing all 7 crew members.
Their aircraft took off at 0030 on 5th of September, 1942 from RAF Bottesford, Lincolnshire
Outward-bound, the aircraft was shot down by the night fighter crew of Hauptmann Helmut Lent & Feldwebel Walter Kubisch of the Stab II./NJG 2, who were flying Bf 110 F-4 R4+AC from Leeuwarden airfield. The aircraft was carrying a bomb load consisting of 4 x 1900 Lb. General purpose (GP) bombs and it was detailed to bomb Bremen. There were no wireless communications received from R5755 from the time of take off. The aircraft failed to return to base.
Reports from other crew of squadron aircraft stated, that the visibility over the target was good and there was no cloud with fairly light winds. One crew reported no enemy opposition of any form.
On the 1st of September Flying Officer Rowland's body was washed ashore on a beach near Staveren Holland and soon after the body of Sgt. Luton was also found. Both crew members were laid to rest on the 24th of September 194s.
