John Thomas Evans, 91, of Aurora, IL, began his eternal life on March 29, 2014, surrounded by his family, after a 2 year battle with cancer. He was born on February 26, 1923 in Anoka County, Minnesota, the sixth child of John and Annie Evans.

He proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps during World War II, where he was awarded the Bronze Star in Saipan. He moved his family from Cassville, Wisconsin to Aurora in 1963. He retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad after 41 years. He was a 50+ year member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

John is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 68 years, Alice M. (Newberry) Evans; his daughter, Wendy Evans of Aurora; his son, Thomas (Sharon) Evans of Mobile, Alabama; his granddaughter, Ame (Dan) Kazmer of Aurora; his grandsons, Adam (Jeanette) Martin of Big Rock, IL and Bob (Sara) Kramer of Aurora; his step-grandson, Todd (Deb) Hendricks of Washington; step-granddaughter, Daphne Hendricks of New Ulm, Minnesota; his grandson, Alex Evans (Stephanie) of Mobile, AL; his granddaughter, Abigail (Rickey) Evans of Seattle, WA and his grandson, Ryan Evans of Salem, OR. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Maggie, Molly and Max Kazmer, Brandon and Austin Kramer and Kailey Martin and his sister-in-law, Ruby Moen. He will be missed by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his father and mother-in-law, Ross and Hilde Newberry; his brothers, Roy, Lisle and Bob; his sisters, Dorothy Gibson and Fay Burnell; his son-in-law, George Martin; his daughter, Lynne Martin; his granddaughter, Sara Kramer and his brother-in-law, Jim Moen.

Memorial service with full military honors will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at 11 A.M. at Wesley United Methodist Church 14 N. May St., Aurora, IL 60506. Visitation will be held from 9 A.M. until the service hour. Interment will be private at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Wesley United Methodist Church.
