Sister Anna Marie Miller, SC, 88, a Sister of Charity for 69 years, died Wednesday, on the Feast of St. Joseph, March 19, 2014, at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in Greensburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John P. and Collette (Berkmyre) Miller; a sister, Mary Margaret (Arthur) Smith; and a brother, William. Bill died just two weeks before Sister.

A Greensburg native, Sister Anna Marie entered the Sisters of Charity January 1, 1946, from Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg.

She earned a B.S. in Education from Seton Hill College and an M.S.Ed. in Elementary Education from Duquesne University. Workshops and conferences provided continuting education.

She served as a 1st grade teacher or principal in schools of the Dioceses of Greensburg and Pittsburgh, and in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.

Missions included:
St. Luke's, Carnegie, (Pittsburgh area), 1948-1951.
Notes were sent to her from a Saint Luke's class reunion many years after she taught there. "You were my idol. I have taught first grade and I just hope I was half as good as you."

Resurrection, Brookline (Pittsburgh), 1975-1980. Sister was Principal, having previously served there as head of the Learning Center.

Principal at both St. James School in Apollo, PA, and at Holy Innocents School in the Sheridan section of Pittsburgh. Sister also ministered at the Seton Hill Day Care Center, Greensburg, and in Maryland.

Sister trained altar boys. One day in Charleroi, PA, she met an altar boy who had served the Mass she had just attended. She told him that his shoes looked scruffy and that he should use some elbow grease on them. Puzzled, the fourth grader said, "We don't have any of that at home."

Sister came back to Greensburg in 1992 to create visual displays of the community's history for jubilees, assemblies, celebrations, and for the Assumption Hall Christmas sale. She helped in the Development Office with the Capital Campaign and the Annual Fund Drive.

In 1993, Sister Anna Marie began her ministry in the Archives of the Sisters of Charity. There was an increasing awareness of her unique artistic talent.
In 1995, preparations for the 125th Anniversary Celebration of the community's founding honed Sister Anna Marie's skills, and it wasn't long before she was appointed Supervisor of Environment and Interior Design for the new building, Caritas Christi.

Everything inside or outside the building carries Sister Anna Marie's fingerprints: from carpets to drapes, paint to picture frames, dishes to chairs, tile floors to tables, altar vessels to holy water fonts, rose bushes to evergreens, the donor recognition board to the statuary in the atrium. She even planned a different decorative motif for each room in the Elizabeth Seton Care Unit. She became Caritas Christi's first sacristan and created floral displays that enhanced the beauty of the chapel.

Visitation was March 23 and 24, 2014, in the Caritas Christi Motherhouse. Funeral Mass was celebrated March 25, in the Chapel of the Assumption, Caritas Christi.

Information from the Funeral Liturgy Reflection by Sister Mary Nolan, SC, and Memorial, both from the SC website.
