Story of Joseph's Death -
Joseph was sick with a bad cold which developed into Acute Lobar Pneumonia. He was getting better and asked to look out the window at the children playing outside. There had been a big snow storm the day before and the children on the block were playing in the snow. Catherine(Mama) bundled him up and let him look out the window for a while. Later that night he ran a high fever and got very sick. Just before he died Grampy(Joseph Gallagher, father) was holding him and rocking him and Joseph Jr. said "Look Papa at all the beautiful Butterflies". He then passed away. Joseph was buried from home. Mom(Catherine Gallagher Guilz) said he was laid out in the "Front Parlor" in a small white casket with candles at each end. Grampy sat up with him so he would not be alone. After 3 days of mourning he was buried in St. Monica's Cemetery in Jamaica, NY. Grammy(Catherine McHugh Gallagher, Mama) would disappear and they would find her at his grave. One time she took a shovel and was going to bring him home. Another time she took a blanket and covered the grave so he wouldn't be cold. She was beside herself with grief. Her sister Rose came every day to watch over her and the remaining children, Catherine, Gertrude and Rose Ellen.
