SIMSBURY — Stitched by hand and patched with memories, a quilt begun nearly five years ago has been sewn up and put on display in the Simsbury senior center.

The 7- by 6-foot quilt, dubbed ''The Fabric of Our Lives,'' contains swatches that came from all over the globe from more than three dozen people, mostly senior citizens. Old ties donated by men from a senior group make up the quilt's border.

Notes from each of the contributors detailing the origins of the fabric are compiled in a three-ring binder. The short explanations provide a peek at the lives, travels and family of the former owners of the fabrics.

Antique velvet swatches contributed by John De Mallie came from boxes in his cellar that contained his wife's art. Teddie De Mallie, who died in 1991, used the velvet in her artwork.

''She had a lot of it from her mother,'' recalled De Mallie. ''I thought this would be nice to donate.''

Also stitched into the quilt is a piece from a U.S. Army mule pack that Frank Polka got from a friend who carried it during World War I.
