OTTO SCHALAU, 52, a bachelor, and his brother, Henry, 40, married and the father of nine children drowned in the same lake when the boat in which they were riding overturned. Both are from Metamora, Mich. A third brother, LaVerne of Thomas, Mich., clung to the boat and was rescued. Schalau's body was recovered at 5:25 p.m. Sunday and Henry's body at 7:25 p.m. Sheriff Clark Gregory and his deputies and members of the Lapeer fire department worked together in recovering the bodies.

Otto and Henry W. Schalau Imlay City, July 11—Henry W. Schalau, 40, and his brother, Otto, 52, drowned Sunday in Minnawanna Lake, about 10 miles southwest of Lapeer, when the boat in which they were riding with another brother, LaVerne, topped over.


Henry Schalau was born May 4, 1914 in Fostoria, Mich. He and Mildred Snover were married March 3, 1938. Mr. Schalau, his wife, their nine children and the brother lived at 3346 West Road.


Henry is survived by six sons, Henry, 17; Paul A., 15; Gregory, 13; Richard D., 11; Edward J., 6 and Walter L., 2; three daughters, Mildred, 9; Linda M., 7, and Karen A., 4; three brothers, Ernest Schalau, Lum; LaVerne Schalau and Frank Schalau, both of Oxford; six sisters, Mrs. Mabel Cheney, Lum; Mrs. Joel Robinet, Imlay City; Mrs. George Schoonever, Attica; Mrs. Jean Benson, Lum; Mrs. Mary Richardson, Rochester, Mich., and Mrs. Anna Bisset, Imlay City, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schalau.


Otto Schalau was born Oct. 5, 1907, also in Fostoria. He never married. He is survived by the above six sisters, three brothers and his parents.


Remains of both men are in the Lester, Smith & Son funeral home where joint services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Graveside services will be at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Imlay City.

Henry served during World War II as a PFC in Co. L, 315 Inf. He enlisted on April 12, 1944 and was honorably discharged on September 9, 1945.


The above article states Henry was born in Fostoria, which is in Tuscola County, Michigan. However, other records state a birth in either North Branch or Lapeer County.
