Billie Jean was the fifth and last child born to the marriage of John William Patterson and the former Ella Mae Bateman. Ella Mae died at age 33, two years after Billie Jean's birth. Unable to take the proper care of a toddler, John Patterson turned over little Billie Jean to his first cousin, Luther Emerson Felts and his wife, the former Mary Jane Burnett, who legally adopted the little girl. She would be Luther and Mary's only child and both doted on her.
In 1953, Billie Jean married Jerry Leon Coker in a lovely wedding. They would bring three children into the world.

Billie Jean's biological father, John William Patterson, is buried in Mason Cemetery, Arp, Texas; FAG #213083729. Her biological mother, Ella Mae (Bateman) Patterson, is buried in the same burial ground, FAG ##185047444.
