In memoriam of Alvin Turner

Alvin G. Turner, of Fayetteville, passed away on March 22, 2014 at the age of 94.

Loved by his devoted wife and soul mate of 71 years, Doris Hayes Turner, he was a faithful husband, a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, a loyal servant of God, and a friend to many.

Alvin was one of 17 children born to Amos and Lilla Banks Turner of Brooks, Georgia.

From his humble beginnings he went on to become a successful farmer, a Ford Auto worker, and a hardworking, well loved, and respected member of his community. After serving in World War II in the 802 Field Artillery under General Patton, Alvin worked at Southern Mills in Senoia and then at the Ford Assembly Plant in Hapeville, Georgia from 1952-1982 where he was a Quality Control inspector. After retiring from Ford, he became active in the UAW Local 882 and served as its Chairperson for many years.

In retirement, he and Doris traveled to all 50 states and enjoyed the companionship of many family and friends on these trips.

An active member of Lisbon Baptist Church, Alvin served as a teacher of the youth, a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and song leader and was a choir member until the age of 85. When asked to complete a task for which he did not have the knowledge, expertise, or experience, his answer was, "I will do the best I can."

In his journey with dementia, Alvin never forgot how to pray to his Lord. His sense of humor, keen until the very end, brought a smile to many faces.

Mr. Turner is preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Lilla Banks Turner; granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Turner; and fifteen brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Doris Hayes Turner; son Ken (Oneida) Turner of Fayetteville; daughter Donna (Mike) Borders of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Scott Borders (Lori Montgomery) of Atlanta; Brent (Julie) Borders of Smyrna; Kenna (Mike) West of Peachtree City; great-grandchildren, Nathan Turner and Lawson West; sister, Carolyn (Al) Braun of Sparks, Nevada; and wonderful caregivers—Anita, Charity, and Yewande.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 25 at 2 PM at Lisbon Baptist Church. Rev. Danny Wilson and Rev. Carlton Swicegood will officiate. The burial will follow in the Lisbon Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00-7:00 at Mowell Funeral Home.
