January 1943 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Preceded in the academy by his brother, Paul S Thompson (USMA 1929) and Jack P Thompson (USMA 1940). They were both killed in action during World War II; and as a result, William Thompson was restricted to stateside duty. Lifted at his request, he was assigned to the 333rd BG that deployed to Okinawa a few days before the first A-Bomb was dropped.

Served during the Korean War with the 92nd BG. After three combat mission, he was returned stateside. Extracted from information originally published in January 1943 50th Anniversary Yearbook; and the Nationwide Gravelocator Site.
