He was a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts for many years. Many of his paintings are single figures of beautiful women. Among his best portraits were those of M. L. Reynaud and the Prince Imperial. His paintings hang in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, Ghent Museum in Belgium, Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, Musée du Luxembourg, among others, as well as in private collections.
