Jay Clarence Gruber
1923 - 2005

Jay Clarence Gruber Sept. 27, 1923 Dec. 1, 2005 Jay was born September 27, 1923, in Deodate, Pennsylvania and was raised on a small farm located near Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, in the heart of Amish country. He went to be with the Lord on December 1, 2005, in Bakersfield, California surrounded by family. Jay enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 and served as a radio operator on B-17 flying fortress bombers in Europe during World War II. He was assigned to the 326th Squadron, 92nd Bombardment Group, based in East Anglia, United Kingdom, and completed the required 35 missions during his tour of duty from May 1944 to August 1944, with two of those missions occurring on June 6, 1944 (D-Day). After his last mission in Europe, he was transferred stateside and reassigned for search and rescue training in Florida, in anticipation of the planned invasion of Japan. After the war, Jay moved to California, attended and graduated from Woodbury College in Los Angeles with a degree in Accounting and Business Administration. During his college days, Jay lived in a boarding house located on Wilshire Boulevard that included many aspiring actors and stuntmen trying to make a living in the movie industry in post-World War II Hollywood. Jay had many fascinating stories about the people he met during this period in his life. After college, Jay worked in several positions that enabled him to gain experience in his career major, and later accepted an assistant manager position with Hayward Lumber Company in Delano, CA, where he also pursued an interest in flying by purchasing a small single-engine airplane and joining a local flying club. In 1954, while living in Delano, jay met his future wife, Beverly Jean Osborne at a barbecue hosted by a common friend. The two were married in 1956. During the first years of their marriage, Jay and Beverly lived in several San Joaquin Valley towns including Hanford, Tulare and Visalia, before permanently settling in Bakersfield in 1967. Jay continued working in the private sector until the mid-1970s when he accepted a position with the Kern County Human Services Department. He retired from this position on March 25, 1989. Jay is preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Henry Gruber; his brother, Raymond Gruber; and by his sister, Ethel Metzler. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Beverly Gruber; son, John and daughter-in-law, Sherrie; grandson, Ryan; granddaughter, Sydney; cousin, Kenneth Ebersole and his wife, Anna Mae; sister-in-law, Marilyn Mobley and her husband, Grant; brother-in-law, James Osborne and his wife, Jean and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his family. The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude for the professional and conscientious care provided by the staff of San Joaquin Community Hospital, Health South Rehabilitation Hospital and California Care Center.
