Vincent was the youngest son of immigrants Pawel and Paulina Zmitrowicz. The family name was also spelled Zmitrovitz, Zmitrovich, Smitrovich and Zmith.

His older sisters were Mary, Helen and Stella.

He enlisted in the Marines on 29 Jul 1941 and was Private First Class. He traveled all over the world during his tour of duty including:
Chicago, Quantico - Virginia, Washington D.C., Navy Island @ Mare Island in California, Clearfield - Utah, parachute school at New River - North Carolina and was in Company "C" First Parachute Battalion- Corps Troops- First Marine Amphibious Corps @ Camp Kiser - New Caledonia, was on the USS Saratoga, was in Auckland New Zealand, and was part of the Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Peiping, China.

He married Juanita Marie Cline and they had two children - Betty and Vincent Jr. He worked at Youngstown Steel and Tube as a steel worker until his death.
