He served in the Army National Guard, 143rd Infantry 36th Division.
In 1971 he married Kathryn Crabtree. He was a member of St Albans Episcopal church, and an avid bird watcher, and bird house builder.
Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Kathryn Abel of Waco; sons, Stan Haddock of Dallas and Robert Abel JR; and granddaughter, Amanda Abel.
