Thomas Henry "Tom" Fox was an advertising account executive for the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, the daily newspaper in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, and raised in Bloomington, Indiana, he was diagnosed with AIDS on October 2, 1987 while living in Atlanta, Georgia. In January 1988 asked reporter Steve Sternberg and photographer Michael Schwarz to follow him in his final months so that he could share his experiences as a person living with and dying from the disease.

The reporter and photographer followed, interviewed, and photographed him and his loved ones for the next year and a half, until his death on July 11, 1989 at a hospital in Eugene, Oregon, while visiting a high school friend.

Tom's story was published soon after his death in July of 1989 and helped to awaken the metro Atlanta community to the AIDS crisis and its devastation to families.
