Solomon was the son of McCager and Barbara Bowen, who married circa 1831, likely in Kentucky where all of their children were born. I found ten siblings for him--William(b.1832), Christina (b.1834), Amanda (b.1836), Moses G. (b.1838), John (b.1841), Mary (b.1843), Jesse Henry (b.1850), Jennie L. (b.1852), Barbara Ellen (b.1856), and Charles (b.1864). I found his family on the 1850 Census, living in District 1, Nicholas County, Kentucky, where Solomon's father McCager (enumerated as "Micajah"), aged 40, was earning a living as a day laborer. Barbara, aged 37, would have had her hands busy at home with their eight children--William, aged 18 and working as a day laborer, Christina, aged 16, Amanda, aged 14, Moses, aged 12, John, aged 9, Mary, aged 7, Solomon, aged 5, and Jesse, aged 1.

By the year 1855, Solomon's family had moved north to Bourbon, Marshall County, Indiana. I found them there on the 1860 Census. McCager (enumerated as "Michageo"). aged 50, had taken up farming. Barbara, aged 47, was home with their seven children--Amanda, aged 21, Moses, aged 19 and helping out on the farm, Mary, aged 17, Solomon, aged 15 and helping out on the farm, Jessie, aged 9, Jennie, aged 8, and Barbara Ellen, aged 4. Solomon's older brother William married Sarah Jane Shankland on 11 Nov 1852 in Nicholas Co., KY. Solomon's older sister Christina had exchanged vows with John Cochran on 13 Mar 1855 in Marshall County. Solomon's older brother John, who would have been 19, likely married as well. There were a number of marriage records for John Bowens between 1855 and 1860 in Indiana, but none in Marshall County.

Solomon's parents and siblings Mary, Jesse, Jennie, (Barbara) Ellen, and Charles, were still living on the family farm in Bourbon when the 1870 Census was taken.

Two years earlier, Solomon had married Elizabeth Mowrer on 31 May 1868 in Marshall County. They too settled in Bourbon and started what would become a big family. I found them on the 1870 Census. Solomon, aged 25, was farming like his father. Elizabeth, aged 19, was home with 1-year-old Manetta. Elizabeth's 60-year-old mother Rebecca Mowrer, was with the family.

Sadly, little Manettie died later that same year.

Solomon and Elizabeth welcomed daughter Jennie Alzaeda in 1871, a year after losing Manettie. A family tree on Ancestry.com has son John joining the family in 1873, and son Mantz in 1875, but neither appears to have survived to the 1880 Census. Solomon and Elizabeth welcomed daughter Myrtle in 1878, followed by Adam Alven the year after. The family was still in Bourbon when the 1880 Census was taken. Solomon, aged 32, was working as a day laborer, likely farming. Home with Elizabeth, aged 29, were daughter Jennie, aged 9, daughter Mertie, aged 3, and baby Adam, aged 8 months.

As the 1990 Census was destroyed in a fire, I couldn't check in on the family that year, but if the family tree on Ancestry is accurate, Solomon and Elizabeth had four additional children--Walter B., born in 1881, Lawrence Carlton, born in 1883, James Oliver, born in 1885, and Frederick, born in 1887. There seem to have been some tragedies in those years as well. Solomon lost wife Elizabeth in 1890 when she was only 40 years old. Their daughter Mertie died in 1892 when she was just 14 years old. I couldn't discover the fates of Jennie, or Adam.

Solomon mourned Elizabeth for ten years before tying the knot for a second time. He married Mary Brakel Scott on 27 Jan 1900 in Marshall County. It was also a second marriage for Mary, who had married John W. Scott on 28 Jun 1887 in Marshall County. Mary brought two children to the marriage--daughter Mary, aged 11, and son Charles, aged 9. She had also lost two children prior to 1900. The four of them appeared together on the 1900 Census, living in Plymouth, Marshall County, where Solomon, aged 51, had found work in a livery barn. Mary, aged 42, was home with her two children Mary and Charles.

Solomon and Mary were still living in Plymouth when the 1910 Census was done. Solomon, aged 62, was working as a laborer in an emery factory. Mary, aged 52, still had Mary home with her. Mary, aged 20, was enumerated with the Scott surname and identified as a step-daughter. She was working as a bookkeeper for a bank. Mary's son Charles, aged 17, had moved to nearby South Bend and was living with Mary's brother John Brakel and John's wife Rose. Charles had found work as a day laborer in a factory.
