As the dawn of day was setting in Mrs. Leander Virginia Ferguson Rucker of Ft. Washington, Md. formerly of Roanoke, Virginia was settling in to be with her Heavenly Father. On Sunday, September 25, 2005 she humbled herself to the Almighty King, who welcomed her home. Leander was employed and retired from Sears Roebuck and Company as a Seamstress and sales clerk. She just loved serving others. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Buford and Harriet Ferguson of Franklin County, Va.; a devoted husband, Arthur James Rucker and granddaughter, Sabrina Rucker Reed. To cherish the many loving memories are three daughters, Vivian Eloise Smith, a loving devoted son-in-law, George (Lefty) Smith of Ft. Washington, Md., Leantine Rucker Thornhill and Shelton Traylor who has been like a loving son since 1998 of Douglasville, Ga., Sharon (Osborne) Vaughan, Roanoke, Va; grandchildren, Vincent (Mary Ann) Cummings, Roanoke, Va., Michael(Latisha) Penn, Ft. Washington, Md., Kevin (Sanaé) Cummings, Litchfield, Az., Marcia Holmes, Bowie, Md., Malachi (Monica) Malik, Forestville, Md., Bobby Thornhill, Atlanta, Ga., Carla Price, Northern Va., brother-in-law, Rev. William (Alice) Rucker, Prospect, Va., sister-in-law, Mattie Elizabeth (Hershel) Thomas, Roanoke, Va., 12 great-grandchildren , one great- great grandchild, a niece, nephews, cousins, other relatives, Elvah Taylor of Roanoke, Va. who was regarded as a daughter and many friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, October 1, 2005 at Sweet Union Baptist Church with Dr. Edward T. Burton officiating. The interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Friends may call on Friday for viewing at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.
