Obituary is from the Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, Va. (www.nashandslawfh.com) website, posted February 23, 2014:

Villard Dale Mendenhall, 77, of Colonial Beach passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at McGuire Veteran's Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, from complications following pneumonia.

Dale served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Colonial Beach United Methodist Church, where he previously served as President of the United Methodist Men and the Administrative Council. He was also past President of the Colonial Beach Lion's Club (2003-2006). After decades working as a business owner and general contractor, he spent his retirement fulfilling his passion for gardening and he had a huge heart for helping others. Dale lived for summertime, when he could plant and nurture his vegetable garden and fruit trees, frequently donating fresh produce to the church's food pantry to help others in need. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends where laughter, jokes and story telling were among his favorite pastimes.

He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Mary Mendenhall; his sister, Anna Powell of Colonial Beach; two daughters, Sherie Bernier of Houston, TX, and Anna Matuson of Tallahassee, FL; a son, Russell Mendenhall of Williamsburg; and a step-son, Woody Perry of Chester, NJ; five grandchildren, Brian Bernier, Jessica Perez, Bryan Menendez, Savannah Perry and Grayson Perry; three great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend and Mrs. H.R. Mendenhall; a son, Dale Wesley Mendenhall; two sisters, Elsie Bloomer and Inez Trent; and a brother, H. Randolph Mendenhall.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude and love to the MICU physicians and nursing staff at the McGuire Veteran's Medical Center – "The extraordinary care and attention shown to Dale and our family over the last five weeks is appreciated more than words can express, and the special bonds we created with the medical team will remain in our hearts forever."

The family will receive friends at 11:00 on Tuesday, February 25, at the Colonial Beach United Methodist Church where the United Methodist Women will host a light lunch.
The funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00 at the church, followed by burial in Historyland Memorial Park, Route 301 North, King George.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy be made payable to the
Colonial Beach United Methodist Church – Food Pantry, Box 189, Colonial Beach, VA 22443, or contributions to the Colonial Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, 225 Dennison Street, Colonial Beach, VA 22443.
