Shedrick L. "Jake" Casteel

Shedrick Lorraine "Jake" Casteel, 79, of Newburg, died Jan. 2, 2014, at Monongalia General Hospital, after a long, hard fight with black lung and COPD.

He was born Aug. 23, 1934, in Hazelton, on his grandparents' farm, where I-68 is now located, a son of the late Robert "Buff" and Josephine Teets Casteel.

He was a graduate of Kingwood High School. He worked more than 40 years as an underground coal miner, starting with a pick and shovel, loading mine cars pulled by ponies, and retiring as a foreman for Island Creek Coal in Bayard after it was bought out by CONSOL. While working for Island Creek, he was part of crews that set international production records for long wall mining.

He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.

He was a two-time cancer survivor.

He was a gentle man who loved his family and never had to raise his voice to be heard.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathy Ann Plum, of Newburg, with whom he made his home; one son, Glenn Allen Casteel, of Kingwood; three grandsons, Martin Plum Jr. and wife Carrie of Howesville, Shedrick "Ricky" Plum and wife Scarlett of Newburg, and Tim Plum and wife Kim, of Newburg; three granddaughters, Lynzie Clark and husband Chris of Loxley, Ala., Kimberly Funk and husband Jim of Tunnelton, and Jennifer Johnson of Howesville; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Keith "Ben" Casteel and wife Anna of Bruceton Mills, Tyrone Casteel and wife Margaret of Birds Creek, and Gary Casteel and wife Leslie of Cashtown, Pa; one sister, Phyllis Sines of Tunnelton; one sister-in-law, Geraldine Sigley and husband Randy of Reedsville; two brothers-in-law, Ted Reed of Hopwood, Pa., and Ralph Thorn and wife Dottie of Tunnelton; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Kathleen Thorn Casteel, in January 2000; a son-in-law, Martin Plum Sr.; one grandson, Mark Plum; three brothers, Robert Casteel, John Casteel and Stanley Casteel; three sisters-in-law, Hannah Thorn, Jean Reed and Joyce Casteel; and three brothers-in-law, William Thorn, Hubert "Buck" Thorn and Robert Sines.

Family and friends may call at the Browning Funeral Home in Kingwood, on Saturday, January 4, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm where services will be held at 2 pm Sunday January 5, 2014 with Reverend Gary Reed officiating. Interment will follow in the Shady Grove Cemetery.
