Mildred Jane Luschen, 89, died Monday, March 19, 2007 in Medford, Ore. Mildred was born May 27, 1917 in Ridgeway, Pa. to Raymond LeRoy Burchfield and Grace Olive Gaupp Burchfield.

Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Dickinson of Warsaw, Poland, Yvonne Bruesch of Spokane, Wash.; one son, Phillip Luschen of Medford, Ore.; one sister, Marie Sessions of Seattle, Wash. Two brothers, predeceased, Bruce Burchfield and Glenn Burchfield. Her grandchildren, Reme Leasure of San Marcos, Calif., Rebecca Bruesch of Spokane, Wash., Rachelle Bruesch of Spokane, Wash., Caroline Dickinson of Portland, Ore., and Trenton Luschen of Baker City, Ore.; and one great-grandson, Noah Covey of San Marcos.

Mildred was a Captain in WWII where she served her country from 1942 to 1945 in the Army Nurse Corps. She was decorated with the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Medal and the American Theater Medal. She was a nurse at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC.

She graduated in Nursing from West Jersey Hospital, Camden, N.J. She also attended Southern Oregon University, and Rogue Community College. She took her last class when she was 80.

After arriving in Oregon in 1947, Mildred pursued her nursing and became an Oregon Certified Registered Nurse in 1949. She worked in several doctors offices in the valley. She also worked at the old Sacred Heart Hospital. Then in 1958 she began working at the newly opened Rogue Valley Memorial Hospital. Mildred was appointed their first Head Nurse in Pediatrics. Over the years she worked in many areas of the hospital.

She retired from Rogue Valley Hospital in 1981. After her retirement, Mildred worked with Mercy Flights for a period of time.

Mildred loved to travel worldwide. She enjoyed her flower gardens, her local sewing group, and most of all her family and friends.

She was a member of the Republican Women, Medford Rose Society, Medford Garden Club, American Legion, and a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church.

A memorial service will be held at Perl Funeral Home, Siskiyou Cemetery, Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. There will be a viewing from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Siskiyou Cemetery. Her interment will be at Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to any organization you wish.
