Eldest son of Joseph Madison Banister & Phebe Adams Burke (both of New York state), Elijah was the first child born after his parent's arrival in Michigan a year or so before.

He married Sarah Merrill in 1872 in Fenton, MI.

They had a family of 3 daughters:
Claudia B., b. 1875 (Mrs. S.M. Preston)
Martha A., b. 1877 (Mrs. B.E. Woolfitt)
Florence A., b. 1887 (Mrs. F.N. Smith)

Elijah became the Michigan state agent for the Singer Sewing Machine Company, and on occasion travelled in that capacity. On his last trip to Detroit in Feb 1892, he was killed in a tragic accident involving the railroad "cars".

His widow survived him by 23 years.
