David was born to Fred J. and Rita E. (Fuerst) Mater. He grew up in Olmitz, and graduated from Hoisington High School in 1970. He attended Barton County Community College. He received a business degree in 1997 from Kansas University.
He was an information systems analyst with Payless ShoeSource in Topeka. He also had worked for King Radio as a design draftsman for 13 years.
He married Kim A. Schulz on June 14, 1980, in San Diego, CA. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Ian K. Mater; a daughter, Madison R. Mater; his mother; and three brothers, Gary, Daniel, and Kenneth J. Mater.
An infant son, Ely John, precedes him in death.
Mr. Mater died at his home of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
