Other survivors include a son, Ian K. Mater; a daughter, Madison R. Mater; his mother; and three brothers, Gary, Daniel, and Kenneth J. Mater.
An infant son, Ely John, precedes him in death.
Mr. Mater died at his home of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
