Robert was a 1st Lieutenant Forward Observer in a Field Artillery unit of the 36th Division in World War Two. Having served in campaigns in Anzio, Italy and southern France, he was captured by the Germans in August 1944 near Remiremont, France and was held as a Prisoner of War in Poland and Germany until the end of the war in Europe. He played a prominent role in the 'Hammelburg Raid" that took place at Oflag XIII-B in Germany in the closing days of the war.
Robert was the last surviving son from a family of seven boys raised in Stigler, Oklahoma. Of the seven sons, three were West Point graduates and two of those were killed in action in World War Two (Lt Col Paul Thompson and Major Pershing Thompson).
A joint burial for Robert and his wife Gladys will be at Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Fort Gibson Oklahoma January 24th at 10:00am.
