Casualty of the Great War, Daniel was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme whilst serving with the 8th Bn. York and Lancaster Regiment~ Service No:13202.

He was the son of John Henry and Agnes Clay of 21 Silver St., Thrybergh, Rotherham. He left a widow, Harriet Clay of Dalton Brook, Rotherham.

His bugle was found by his grandson in Rotherham market over 90 years later and he played it during the Remembrance Service at the Rotherham War Memorial in 2010.
