Leon Azel Phillips, M.D. died Friday, February 17, 2006. He was a Mercer Island resident for nearly 50 years with his wife, Lucille, raising their two sons and enjoying their two grandchildren.

Dr. Phillips was born September 1, 1923 in Mehama, Oregon and grew up in Buckley, Washington. An Army veteran of World War II, he attended the University of Washington and Yale University Medical School, where he graduated in 1952. He married Lucille Rinaudo on July 3, 1948 at the University Presbyterian Church in Seattle, Washington. After an internship at Swedish Hospital in Seattle and a residency at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, he spent his career on the staff of the University of Washington Medical Center. Dr. Phillips especially enjoyed his teaching position at the UW Medical School, retiring in 1987 as an Associate Professor of Medicine.

Leon loved the mountains of the area and spent many happy days there, skiing and hiking with friends and family.
